JVS was founded in 1939 to help Jewish immigrants fleeing from an increasingly threatening situation in Europe. They came to America, looking for a safe place to live and to integrate into the country through employment. Faced with a language barrier and antisemitism, they came to JVS for help.

Since then, JVS has evolved to support people of any religion, ethnicity, or race. Our goal, today as in our past, is to help people overcome barriers to employment related to age, ability, education, immigration status, job skills, language, and other socioeconomic factors.

Today, JVS and our impact has grown significantly. We provide individualized services to more than 2,000 people annually through our job skills programs, English as a Second Language, GED Prep classes, Citizenship classes, disability services, and career services. We help an additional 2,000+ people through our JobSeekers programs and incumbent worker training.
