Working Families Makes A Lot of Noise But Remember Whom They Speak For

InsiderNJ reports that Working Families Alliance head Sue Altman had to be removed from a legislative hearing on the Economic Development Authority.  Altman issued a statement after her removal, calling it “the dirty underbelly of a machine that will subvert democracy in its ruthless goal to accumulate and maintain power.”

But whom is Working Families speaking for?  It is a fact that Working Families has taken in at least $845,000 from the NJEA, including $50,000 this fall to get out the vote for the NJEA’s favored candidates.  It is a fact that Working Families is specifically mentioned in the NJEA’s planning as an advocacy organization that the NJEA will coordinate its activities with.  It is a fact that Working Families maintains very close ties with the NJEA and its other public sector unions allies, AFT, CWA, AFSCME, and SEIU.  This will all be detailed in SPCNJ’s forthcoming report on the NJEA’s vast network of allies.

The NJEA is of course New Jersey’s most powerful special interest and most influential political machine. And one of the NJEA’s top policies is to stop New Jersey’s corporate incentive program so that the foregone tax revenues can be used for the NJEA’s agenda.  As set forth in previous SPCNJ reports, Altman’s words could just as easily describe the NJEA, New Jersey’s taxpayer-funded political machine.

So when Altman and Working Families speak, listeners should remember exactly who they are speaking for.
